Britain’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) on Tuesday placed charges in court against engineering major Alstom Network UK Ltd related to bribing officials and agents of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to the tune of over 3 million Euros to secure contracts.

Dubai The Dubai Department of Finance announced Wednesday that it has completed dual currency financing of $675 million (Dh2.48 billion) to complete phase 1 of the construction of the Al Sufouh Tram project. Earlier this month, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) awarded a 13-year maintenance contract for the Al Sufouh tramway to a consortium comprising Alstom and Cofely Besix Facility Management (FM).

Among the most important projects awarded to French firms is Al Safouh Tram, which has seen a milestone last October where His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, launched the model station and carriage of the tram for the project.

Representatives from Alstom, the French engineering company handling the project, said yesterday at the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) Mobility and City Transport Exhibition that construction had resumed with some changes to the original plan and a renewed focus on prompt completion.

An Alstom spokesman said that "Alstom is willing to contribute to the reconstruction program in Iraq, in particular within the public transport area. Thus, Alstom has signed an agreement that opens a period of discussions with Baghdad local government, with the objective of signing a contract for the Baghdad Elevated Train." The project involves building a line that runs for 25 kilometers on a viaduct, which is aimed to reduce congestion in the city. It will link the areas of Al Mustansiriya and Alawi al Hilla in central Baghdad.

The consortium of firms behind Dubai’s long-awaited Al Sufouh Tram project has begun a work slowdown as cash concerns continue to plague the multibillion-dollar track. The group, which includes French conglomerate Alstom and Belgium’s Besix, has scaled back the pace of construction on the state-backed tram as discussions over refinancing continue.

French engineering group Alstom (ALSO.PA) has signed an outline agreement with Iraq to build a metro line above Baghdad's streets, an official said. Shaker al-Zamili, the head of Baghdad Investment Commission, said on Thursday Iraqi officials signed a memorandum of understanding with Alstom in France last week. An Alstom spokeswoman in Paris confirmed the agreement was signed last Saturday, allowing exclusive talks for the building of 25 km (15 miles) of high-level track.

Dubai’s Dh4 billion (US$1.08bn) Al Sufouh Tram project in Jumeirah is set to open in late 2014, rather than in April next year as originally planned, transport officials said yesterday. The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is working to resolve funding issues on the 14km tramway, said Abdul al Hassan, the director of rail planning and development at the RTA.
