Construction in Abu Dhabi takes hit
The Middle Eastern division of Atkins, the UK engineering and design company working on the Dubai Metro and the Etihad Rail line, pointed to "a slowdown in the release of projects" in Abu Dhabi when it reported yesterday a 3.7 per cent drop in profit for the first half of its fiscal year.
Britain's Atkins to increase Middle East headcount
Atkins, the British construction engineer, said Thursday it will increase its headcount in Middle East after recording a 70 percent rise in regional full-year profit. The firm, whose projects include the Dubai Metro and Durrat Al Bahrain, said it will grow employee numbers chiefly in Saudi Arabia and Qatar to accelerate expansion in those markets.
Increased integration essential, says MEP panel
The sharp downturn, combined with additional regulatory requirements, has placed huge pressures on the construction industry -- and the only way for the industry to cope is to work much closer together, from designers to contractors, said Buro Happold director Kevin Mitchell at the Construction Week conference in Abu Dhabi. Crowder said Atkins had deployed a BIM approach successfully on the Dubai Metro, and carried this through to its work on major metro projects in Makkah and Calcutta.
