The total number of passengers who used mass transit means during the New Year's Eve celebrations reached 1,656,286 passengers; where the metro ridership clocked 727,829 passengers, taxis users reached 525,997 passengers, bus riders hit 314,109 passengers, inter-city bus riders touched 44,587 passengers, and marine transit means users amounted to 43,764 passengers.

Those who have previously visited fireworks celebrations on New Year’s Eve in Dubai know one thing for sure — it’s best to leave the car at home and take public transport.

Two master communities in Dubai -- the Business Bay and Downtown Dubai - are finally being interlinked. By year-end, these districts will be linked by a road and tunnel that will cut travelling time and provide easy accessibility to residents and others.

RTA Chairman of the Board and Executive Director confirmed that the new stations were ready to receive passengers. “22 trains will be deployed during peak time and 16 trains will be in operation during off-peak time, and the service frequency (headway) will be 6 minutes during peak time and 8 minutes during off-peak time. RTA has carried out site surveys covering the neighbourhood of all stations to be opened shortly and accordingly opened new bus routes to feed the metro stations. 28 buses are being deployed to link the metro stations with the surrounding areas and the service is set to run at 13-20 minutes frequency,” he elaborated.

"Stations to be opened include Business Bay, First Gulf Bank, Sharaf DG, Nakheel and Jumeirah Lake Towers stations, and the remaining three stations will be opened upon completion of real estate and investment projects around them; as they have been especially constructed to serve these projects in which construction works are still underway,"

The stations that are not yet open are Business Bay, First Gulf Bank, Sharaf DG, Nakheel, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Energy Station, Jebel Ali Industrial and Jebel Ali. Only Sharaf DG and Jumeirah Lakes Towers are near residential areas.

The delay has been caused by low projected numbers of probable users and a lack of development around some stations, said Ramadan Mohammed, the director of rail operations at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
