A day before Diwali, when crowds thronged some Delhi Metro stations, they were in for a shock.

Commuters on Dubai-Sharjah bus routes are being forced to buy Nol cards as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has stopped issuing tickets to Sharjah-bound passengers.

Commuters on New Delhi's metro face long lineups and airport-style security checks but it's still better than battling the city's traffic.

The leading French technology firm Thales is looking to replicate its success with the Dubai Metro in Hyderabad, which is planning a modern metro system. Thales, which provides India with the crucial defence technology, is now offering its expertise in civilian technology, inclu-ding signalling, telecommunications and ticketing, for the Hyderabad Metro project.

"Automation is certainly a guarantee for safety and punctuality. We saw this as the best option and it has proved to be the right choice," said Adnan Al Hammadi, chief executive of Rail Agency, a part of Dubai's Road Transport Authority that runs the metro here. "As a result, the time between trains is just under four minutes. Also, our punctuality is above 99 percent," Al Hammadi told a group of visiting Indian journalists while making a presentation on Dubai Metro.

Attrition in Delhi Metro has been a worry and the former MD, E Sreedharan, often talked about this. Senior and middle level employees work with the best technology in the world, adding value to their CVs, and move on. DMRC has lost engineers at all levels to DLF Metro, Mumbai Metro and Dubai Metro besides others. In fact, its former director (projects), CBK Rao, had quit to join DLF Metro.

The Bangalore metro project has employed this technique successfully. The monopile has been successful for the Dubai metro rail and in a south east country, according to MEGA officials.
