GCC countries to spend over $100bn on rail networks
Governments in the GCC have instigated plans for multi-billion dollar transport and networking projects that will help further the region's clout as a magnet for international logistics and engineering service providers. The countries of the GCC are set to spend over $100bn on setting up modern rail networks connecting all countries of the Arabian Peninsula.
Lusail light rail contracts awarded
Rolling stock and systems contracts will form the final phase of the project, which is scheduled for completion in 2016. Turner & Townsend is advising QRail on the project. QRail has invited expressions of interest in the Doha metro project, the first phase of which includes 22 km of tunnel and 15 underground stations.
Vinci joint venture lands US$ 540 million Qatar metro project
A joint venture between Vinci Construction Grands Projets (49%) and QDVC (51%) has won the € 374 million (US$ 540 million) contract to build a light rail transit (LRT) system in the new Qatari city of Lusail, 15 km north of the capital Doha. QDVC is a subsidiary of Qatari Diar, a state-owned investment company that also owns 5.7% of Vinci.

The Managing Director and Board Member of Qatar Railways Company Engineer Abdullah Abdul Aziz Al Subaie has said that the company is currently working on the documents of its first tender for the railway and metro system in Qatar, adding that the tender is expected to be offered soon and that some preliminary designs have already been prepared.

Qatar to fund 2022 World Cup with cash
The Qatari government will be able to pay for US$70 billion (Dh257.1bn) of infrastructure projects for the 2022 Fifa World Cup of football out of cash flow, the chief of the International Bank of Qatar (IBQ) says. The infrastructure is to be built in phases. Work on a national rail system and metro lines in Doha is expected to start in 2015, along with the development of an airport, a deepwater port and a causeway connecting Qatar with Bahrain.
