His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of the Executive Council, has issued a Decision appointing Yousef Ahmed Jawad as Chief Executive Officer of the Corporate Administrative Services Sector, Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai.

Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), said: “Targeting to realise multi-modal integration of mass transit systems as envisaged in the RTA Strategic Plan, which is aligned with the Dubai Strategic Plan (Infrastructure Sector) aimed at providing an integrated road and transport system that ensures smooth traffic flow and the highest levels of safety for all system users.” RTA is making expeditious efforts to make the public transport means the ideal mobility choice for people in the Emirate.

The high-speed railway includes the Doha Metro Network; an east coast rail link; a high-speed link between the new Doha International Airport, Doha city centre and Bahrain via the planned Qatar-Bahrain Friendship Bridge; a freight rail link based on the GCC rail link studies; and light rail systems within specific developments, including Qatari Diar’s Lusail mega-project.

Gas-rich Doha must scramble to complete multibillion-dollar projects including the much-delayed $4bn Qatar-Bahrain Causeway, and its $25bn metro and rail scheme – originally slated for completion in 2025 – said National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) in a report.

Projects in the pipeline include a 25-billion-dollar metro and rail network, some sections of which will be ready for the World Cup, and a 10-billion-dollar Doha International Airport, the first phase of which will open in 2012.

‘Sleepy’ Doha in the summer of 2022 is now guaranteed to be the most famous city on the planet, as audiences of billions tune in to the games. Between now and then some $57bn has been earmarked on infrastructure alone for the football matches, and accommodation and transportation for fans. Roads will be dug, hotels will be erected, sewage systems will be installed. A metro will be built.

The Dubai Metro was one such project where the company offered its services. For this project it was decided that the construction be segmented, so parts of the deck are precast elsewhere and assembled on site using a special gantry. “Sometimes if we can’t use the existing design,” he says, “the company proposes an alternative. We were able to achieve a segment for every two days. We own the specialist equipment, and it’s the first of its kind in the GCC.

As well as an array of ongoing and planned road, bridge and utilities projects by Ashghal, the country is also investing in the development of the New Doha International Airport (NDIA); a new, deep-water Doha Port, set to replace the existing port; on top of a sophisticated metro system forming one part of country-wide, integrated, railway network.
