Limitless, a leading real estate firm in Dubai, has launched an initiative that is encouraging travellers across the emirate to switch from road transport to rail from April 18. Globally, people spend, on average, five years of their life in traffic. Limitless’ policy of moving people and not just cars at its developments – including The Galleries – will reduce pollution, save money, improve health and boost productivity, a statement said.

Under the patronage of HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the winners of the 3rd Princess Haya Award for Special Education were announced at an official ceremony yesterday evening at Dubai - Madinat Jumeirah. Attending on Princess Haya's behalf was H.E. Humaid Al Qutami, Minister of Education, who was joined by H.E. Dr. Hanif Hassan, Minister of Health, senior government officials, heads of departments, public and private sector representatives and other dignitaries.

Dubai is one step closer to realising self-service ticketing using chip and PIN cards across its 49 Metro stations as payment technology provider Hypercom’s payment systems and terminals have received full EMV certification.

Dubai commuters can now enjoy the benefits and convenience of two cards in one with the development of a co-branded card scheme that will link Dubai Metro's Nol card with Visa credit and debit cards. The combi-card will also give commuters the ability to top-up their Nol metro cards automatically by linking it to their Visa debit or credit cards.

Dubai is already home to the largest driverless rail system in the world and now the emirate plans to broaden its train lines further. Zawaya.com reported that the rail network in Dubai is set to be extended to cover 250 km by the next decade - a significant increase on the 75 km it currently serves.

Canadian firm in talks to supply trains for the proposed 1,200km railway network project. Dubai Trains and aircraft manufacturer Bombardier is in active talks with Etihad Rail (erstwhile Union Railway) to supply trains for the proposed 1,200km railway network project, through its transport unit, Bombardier Transportation, according to a top Bombardier official.

A total of around 10,000km of railway that includes national railway projects, metro, monorail and tramways have set the mass transit system rolling in the GCC countries at an estimated cost of $106 billion. The projects, which are currently at various stages of planning, construction and implementation, are being showcased at the 59th UITP Congress and Mobility & City Transport Exhibition.

Future urban transportation will largely be dominated by electric mobility, stated Hans-Jörg Grundmann, chief of the Siemens Mobility Division. Siemens will also be showing its all-electric omnibus concept for the first time at a UITP Exhibition.

Emirates NBD, a leading bank in the Middle East, plans to open 10 more branches by the end of 2011 and soon will launch a new RTA card with Nol products loaded, Head of Group Marketing Vikram Krishna said. Emirates NBD will soon announce a new RTA card, which will come with loaded Nol application.
