Saudi Arabia is proceeding with public transport projects as scheduled and companies may face penalties if there are delays, Minister of Transport Abdullah al-Muqbil was quoted as saying by a leading Arabic newspaper on Sunday.

Metro Jeddah Company announced that it will finalize the design for the Jeddah Metro Project by October, Al-Hayat reported.

Hyder has been appointed as a part of the Foster + Partners team to develop the architectural vision for a new, comprehensive public transport system in Jeddah.

Foster + Partners is to develop the architectural vision for Jeddah’s city-wide public transport master plan under a contract signed by Prince Khalid Al-Faisal bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, Governor of Makkah Province, on March 30.

In 2020, Madinah hopes to commission a new three-line metro network and add to the Middle East’s growing number of current urban rail projects.

The Jeddah Metro, which is expected to cost SR45 billion, will be ready by 2022, said Osama Ibrahim Abdu, CEO of the metro company. The new metro project would reduce traffic congestion in the sprawling business city, he said.
