His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has given the go-ahead for a number of ambitious development projects by the Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD) over the coming three years.

Travelling by car in Dubai and suffering the congestion, especially during rush hours, made me wonder what would have happened if the Metro wasn’t there. More than that is the passenger traffic on the Metro itself and wondering how they would have commuted and how much more congestion on the roads we would have seen.

During the visit, discussions focused on Zukhr initiative; which avails select and distinguished package of services to Emirati elderlies in which more than 35 government, semi-government and private entities take part.

Preparations are in full swing at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) for the upcoming Unified GCC Traffic Week 2014, which runs from 9-14 March 2014, featuring a wide participation from the Ministry of Interior and Traffic Directorates / departments across the GCC countries.

Just over four decades ago, when the first road in Dubai was laid, who would have imagined a million cars in Dubai? Not many would have envisaged the Metro either when a fleet of five buses was launched in 1968 as the first public bus service.

On September 9, 2009, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, inaugurated Dubai's first Metro line.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has recently launched, for the second time running, Terhal Integrated Package, and distributed it in several Dubai Metro stations, various business outlets and money exchange shops. The Package, which includes purchase vouchers and discounts of up to AED 2000, is sold to the worth of AED 65.

The cards feature images of Dubai’s sites such as the Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa, Al Bastakiya, the Clock roundabout, the Trade Centre, and many other sites and locations. The idea behind issuing these designs is to introduce both residents and visitors to the most important features of Dubai along with its tourism sites and other scenic locations.

Nol cardholders will be able to zip around the emirate for free today on the Metro, buses and water buses for the Roads and Transport Authority's third annual Public Transport Day. Festivities include a street party on Al Seef Road between 5pm and 9pm, and RTA employees will hold quiz shows at bus shelters and Metro stations to award commuters with iPads, bikes and Nol cards.
