Five new Metro stations to open on Friday

Just five months after adding 10 new stations to the previously operating number of 11, the RTA is gearing up to open five strategically located stops this Friday. Supported by 28 new feeder buses on 6 new routes, the five stations — Jumeirah Lake Towers (JLT), Nakheel, Sharaf DG, First Gulf Bank and Business Bay — are seen as additional gateways to their surrounding neighbourhoods already catered by a station nearby.

The operating times for Dubai Metro are to be extended by up to one hour, from October 15, but only on Thursdays and Fridays. "Now passengers will be able to use the metro from 6am to 12pm on Thursdays and from 1pm to 12am on Fridays," said Adnan Al Hammadi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Rail Agency of Dubai Roads and Transport (RTA). Currently, the trains run from 6am to11pm from Saturday to Thursday and from 2pm to 12am on Fridays.

RTA Chairman of the Board and Executive Director confirmed that the new stations were ready to receive passengers. “22 trains will be deployed during peak time and 16 trains will be in operation during off-peak time, and the service frequency (headway) will be 6 minutes during peak time and 8 minutes during off-peak time. RTA has carried out site surveys covering the neighbourhood of all stations to be opened shortly and accordingly opened new bus routes to feed the metro stations. 28 buses are being deployed to link the metro stations with the surrounding areas and the service is set to run at 13-20 minutes frequency,” he elaborated.

The stations that are not yet open are Business Bay, First Gulf Bank, Sharaf DG, Nakheel, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Energy Station, Jebel Ali Industrial and Jebel Ali. Only Sharaf DG and Jumeirah Lakes Towers are near residential areas.

Serco signs up for new line of business

Nakheel has hired the services company Serco to take over operations of the Palm Jumeirah Monorail after cancelling a contract with the Singaporean rail company SMRT Engineering last month. Serco, which operates and maintains Dubai Metro, took over the 5.5km line on Palm Jumeirah last Friday.

Developer Nakheel has hired the British company Serco to operate and maintain the Palm Jumeirah Monorail, the company said in a statement. The Palm Jumeirah Monorail was the first such project to be constructed in the Middle East. The system is fully automatic and driverless and can carry up to 2,400 passengers per hour per direction in four separate trains, each made up of three cars. At full capacity, the figure rises to a maximum of 6,000 people in nine vehicles.
