Dubai Metro jam-packed? Max occupancy of 643 per train not yet...
The total number of passengers using the Dubai Metro in 2012 amounted to 109.491 million, the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) announced this week. Compared to the previous year, this means an increase of nearly 20 per cent. Emirates 24|7 asked if this would lead to any adjustments to the preferred public transport means of Dubai.
RTA inks agreement for distribution of parking and Salik
The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has recently signed partnership agreement with Al Buhaira National Insurance Company, whereby the latter will distribute prepaid parking cards, Salik tags, and Salik account top-up cards at its outlets in various land border posts of the UAE.
Free train and bus travel as Dubai marks Public Transport Day
Nol cardholders will be able to zip around the emirate for free today on the Metro, buses and water buses for the Roads and Transport Authority's third annual Public Transport Day. Festivities include a street party on Al Seef Road between 5pm and 9pm, and RTA employees will hold quiz shows at bus shelters and Metro stations to award commuters with iPads, bikes and Nol cards.
Smartphones will double as Nol Cards in 2013
Beginning 2013, commuters using public transport in Dubai will be able to use compatible smartphones to pay their fare, a senior official at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced. Instead of using Nol Cards, commuters who have smartphones with Near Field Communication (NFC) Technology will be able to swipe their mobiles over sensors mounted on access gates at Dubai Metro stations besides public buses and Water Bus services.

RTA launches e-package
“The number of hits received by the RTA website (www.rta.ae) has jumped from 926,000 hits in 2009 to 5.336 million hits in 2011. The number of text messages leapfrogged from 25 million in 2009 to 34.164 million messages in 2011.The number of RTA online service users soared from 12,677 users in 2006 to about 137,000 users in 2011, and the number of companies registered in the website grew to about 12,000 companies in 2011 compared to about 3,000 companies in 2006.”
RTA to open new water routes to Lebanon Island
The Public Transport Agency, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), is considering to open shortly new commercial water routes via Ferry Dubai to Lebanon Island located at the World Island, in coordination with the Island such that visitors can access the Island and enjoy all services in place.
