Dubai: Use of public transport is expected to increase in November once the Dubai Tram begins serving commuters in the densely populated areas of new Dubai.

As quiet and tranquil living on Palm Jumeirah can be during weekdays and nights, during weekends the man-made island turns host to thousands of fun-seekers, heading towards the popular Nasimi Beach, located at the very end.

Nakheel, Dubai-based master developer, will commence construction on Dh2.5 billion Nakheel Mall on Palm Jumeirah this year and is expected to open it in 2016.

Over the years, SMRT has acquired considerable knowledge and experience of designing, operating and maintaining both driven and driverless MRT systems, and has a growing consultancy arm that offers advice on all aspects of MRT, from initial design and specification through to operations and maintenance. Among the many international projects it has worked on to date are the Palm Jumeirah monorail in Dubai which it also operated for three years, and MRT systems in Korea, Mumbai, Chennai and Ho Chi Minh City.

Serco, the UK-based operator of the Dubai Metro, said it expected revenues to increase to about $8bn by the end of 2012, on the back of strong global demand for its services. Operating profit margins are forecast to rise to 6.3 percent by the end of 2012, the company said in a statement.

SMRT said its second-quarter net profit fell 13.3 per cent from a year earlier to S$45.8 million. The next 12 months may be challenging, the transport operator said. Profit declined despite revenue for the period rising 7.2 per cent to S$246 million.
