The system would connect existing transport networks, including the Dubai Metro and the Palm Monorail on Palm Jumeirah. It would link with the Metro's Red Line at two stops, Jumeirah Lakes Towers and Dubai Marina, according to the RTA.

The mass transit system in Dubai witnessed an improvement in the quality and number of means used to deliver services to passengers and the number of public transport users (metro, buses, marine transit modes and taxis) is expected to rise from 250 million in 2009 and 289 million passengers in 2010 to as much as 350 million passengers by the end of this year.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is seeking to make the 3rd edition of the Public Transport Day a highly captivating event with the aim of attracting more passengers to use public transport means, including the metro, public buses and water bus, free of charge for one day.

The much-speculated extension of the Green Line of Dubai Metro, which began its operations last month, is a certainty with plans to stretch it up to the Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) soon, a senior Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) official told Khaleej Times.

As many as 606,000 people used public transport on November 1 last year, a 39 per cent increase from the daily average of 436,700 riders in 2010. This year, the response is expected to be even greater, with the Green Line of the metro being an added attraction.

The day will be marked with a free use of the Dubai Metro, public buses and water bus for Nol card holders. The second round of the initiative is set to be widely popular among public and private entities as well as all community segments.

"The Public Transport Day initiative, which attracts participation of various government authorities and departments as well as private sector entities and different community segments, aims at highlighting the role of Dubai Emirate in supporting the initiatives that contribute to the improvement of the environment, attaining sustained development, encouraging inhabitants to use public transport modes and promoting the modern mass transit means provided by the RTA including the Dubai Metro, public buses and marine transit systems," said Al Tayer.

The CEO of Rail Agency, Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) Adnan Al Hamadi, urged the public to use metro on the Public Transport Day; a key initiative recently launched by the RTA scheduled on November 1st, 2010. He hailed the initiative, which is the first rolled on by the RTA to encourage the public to use public transport modes and benefit from the multiple advantages and features that render them trustworthy by all users at all times. The Metro is one of these means that offer commuters a convenient ride across Dubai roads, he noted.

However, Nol card holders can use the Metro, or avail of the water and bus rides free of charge in celebration of Public Transport Day on November 1, which the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched to commemorate its fifth anniversary.

H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), announced the launch of ‘Public Transport Day’ initiative on November 1st, 2010 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the RTA during which free metro, bus and water bus rides will be offered to all Nol Card holders.
