Doha now holds the Guinness World Record for operating the highest number of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) in a single city at one time, Qatar Rail has announced.

Hochtief ViCon has been awarded another Doha Metro project; this time for its BIM capacities.

The Light Rail Transport (LRT) Project in Lusail will be connected to the Doha Metro Red Line North via two main stations, Lusail Marina/the Pearl and Lusail's main station, said Engineer Abdulla Abdulaziz Al Subaie, Managing Director, Qatar Rail.

Trucks can be seen speeding around Doha's business district, carrying building materials for the $150 billion makeover that will give the city a new metro, airport, seaport and roads.

The massive project includes plans for a high-speed long distance rail link, driverless four-line Metro service for Doha and freight lines. The plans also include the West Bay People Mover, and overground rail system designed to distribute passengers around Doha’s tower district. The initial push will be to develop the Doha Metro Red Line that runs between Messaieed in the south with Al Khor in the North.

Rolling stock and systems contracts will form the final phase of the project, which is scheduled for completion in 2016. Turner & Townsend is advising QRail on the project. QRail has invited expressions of interest in the Doha metro project, the first phase of which includes 22 km of tunnel and 15 underground stations.
