The Jeddah Metro, which is expected to cost SR45 billion, will be ready by 2022, said Osama Ibrahim Abdu, CEO of the metro company. The new metro project would reduce traffic congestion in the sprawling business city, he said.

With an aim to ease the congestion at Delhi's Rajiv Chowk Metro station, a 3.23-km-long metro section from Central Secretariat to Mandi House station was opened for public on Thursday.

While the world population is expected to grow to 8.3 billion by 2030, public transport will remain the backbone of multi-modal mobility services in the future. This was affirmed by a transport expert, who predicted a significant spike in the use of public transport in the region by 2025.

After many years of expectation, the major public transport schemes proposed for Saudi Arabia finally seem to have moved off drawing boards towards solid tenders and contract awards.

The 67-km Orange line will connect Makkah Road with Obhur, passing through the central part of the city northward. It will have 22 stations besides a branch line to the east along Sari Street, Kutubkhana said. The 24-km Blue line will link King Abdulaziz International Airport to the Old Airport Road with 17 stations. The 17-km Green line will run along Palestine Road with a branch to the Old Airport and end at the Haramain Railway. It will have only seven stations, the official said.

Work stalled on big-ticket projects including Dubai Metro’s Green Line and the Al Sufouh Tram, over complaints of non-payment from contractors. The RTA said in January it would seek funding for nearly a third of its infrastructure schemes over the next five years in a bid to spread the risk and cost of large projects.

Contracts for the GCC rail project are expected to be awarded in December this year while the $15.5 billion (Dh56.93bn) project is set to be fully operational by as early as 2016, a senior official said.
