Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority plans to crack down harder on illegal transport services, which has seen an increase in the past few years, with violators facing confiscation of vehicles and repeat offenders likely to face jail time, followed by deportation.

H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), has recently received in his office H.E. Major General Mohammed Saeed Al Murri, Chairman of the Dubai Fishermen Cooperative Association, who praised the efforts of the RTA in providing the infrastructure of roads & parking at the premises of the Association.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is continuing its campaign to crack down on the practice of providing illegal passenger transportation on private vehicles, against fares which are less than the applicable taxi rates; which amounts to a flagrant breach of transportation rules, be it within Dubai or from Dubai to other Emirates.

Metro and bus commuters in Dubai will soon be able to pay for their journey using mobile phones. A senior official at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) confirmed the service would be made available by the third quarter of this year. Speaking with Khaleej Times, Abdulla Al Madani, CEO of Corporate Technical Support Services at RTA said: “We are working very closely with telecom providers in the UAE to roll out Nol services on mobile phones by the third quarter of this year.”

Major road projects have significantly improved Dubai’s roads network in recent years, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) told Gulf News. Statistics from the RTA show that the road network now exceeds 12,403 lane kilometres, increasing by 1,300 lane kilometres from 2010 to 2012.

The Asset Management Department of the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) briefed a visiting delegation from the Federal Electricity & Water Authority (FEWA) about the practices used in managing RTA assets; which are aligned with the highest international standards. The visit aimed at exchanging expertise and upgrading the business process.

Payment of taxi fares will become hassle free in the next couple of months as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) enables Nol card and credit card payments, Gulf News has learnt. A senior RTA official told Gulf News that all taxis have been upgraded already and the new payment modes will be introduced by April.

The Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has marked out every parking spot, that was free, under the paid parking zones. “This is a residential area and it’s unfair to make us pay for the parking. We have two cars, and the building allocates only one free parking slot. We are now forced to pay up,” protested a resident at the Al Safa building in the area.
