739,000 travel for free in Dubai on Public Transport Day
Almost three quarters of a million commuters travelled for free on the Metro, buses and water taxis to mark Public Transport Day yesterday. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) estimates that 739,000 passengers took advantage of the waived fees, an increase of more than 42,000 from last year.
Two Emirati artists commissioned for outdoor project

RTA meets quad bike dealers
The Monitoring & Enforcement Dep’t at the Licensing Agency of the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has recently conferred with a number of quad bikes dealers to examine the diverse registration mechanisms & technologies in place in a bid to improve the process, and raise the awareness of quad bikers as well. To this effect, a gathering was held in RTA Head Office in the presence of Nabeel Al Ali, Director of Monitoring & Enforcement Dep’t, and a host of RTA officials.
Massive turn out for blood donation drive
Two medical camps were held, one each at Airport Terminal 3 station and Dubai Healthcare City station, that saw people from diverse walks of life participate. But the biggest draw was the blood donation drive that was held at Al Ghubaibah station, where snaking queues of people eager to part with their blood could be seen since morning.
RTA launches contest for best design
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has rolled out in early October this year a new traffic contest targeting more than 5000 university students inviting them to come up with creative designs in a form of a poster raising the awareness of "Driving Distracters".
RTA showcase benefits of public transport
In the context of the Public Transport Day, the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) held a number of events during a site tour made by a mobile stand to key shopping malls in the Emirate with the aim of educating the public on the benefits of using mass transit systems (Dubai Metro, public buses and the Water Bus); which will be offered free of charge for Nol Card holders to mark the Public Transport Day on Nov 1st.
New Dubai Metro timings for Eid, weekends
Complementing the Eid in Dubai celebrations, the metro will operate from 5:30am to 4am on October 18 and on October 25, 27 and 28 to coincide with the Eid holidays, and on November 1. On Fridays during this period, the trains will run from 10am to 4am. Trains will continue with normal operation hours on weekdays.
Smartphones will double as Nol Cards in 2013
Beginning 2013, commuters using public transport in Dubai will be able to use compatible smartphones to pay their fare, a senior official at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced. Instead of using Nol Cards, commuters who have smartphones with Near Field Communication (NFC) Technology will be able to swipe their mobiles over sensors mounted on access gates at Dubai Metro stations besides public buses and Water Bus services.
Dubai speedsters: More than half-a-million fined
Speeding accounts for half of traffic violations in Dubai. More than half a million speedsters have been caught on radars in the first nine months of this year in the emirate, according to a top official at the Dubai Traffic Police Department.
