Dubai to get 100 pedestrian bridges by 2012

Dubai will have more than 100 pedestrian bridges within the next two years, Gulf News has learnt. The official said that construction on at least 16 pedestrian bridges is on the cards. There are slight changes in the specifications and the completion time has been extended. The more than 100 pedestrian bridges by 2012 will include 47 metro station bridges when all the Metro stations on the Red and the Green Line open by the end of 2011.

Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) opens today Tuesday the bridges leading to the entry and exit points of Murdiff City Center near Emirates Road. The project comprises a 3-lane bridge for traffic inbound from Emirates Road (Rashidiya) heading towards the Center, and another bridge to serve the traffic inbound from Tripoli Road to the Center.

He added that the metro was the ideal and best means of travelling to the key centers in the city rather than using cars. "The number of passengers in 2010 is set to grow further with the opening of rest of the stations on the Red Line of the Metro," said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA. He hoped that only the Metro would carry more than 35 millon passengers this year as the users are increasing gradually.
