Rail as a solution is looming large on the UAE's logistics horizon. A number of light rail projects — one in Abu Dhabi in addition to Dubai Metro — connecting to the UAE's national rail, is expected to change the transport and logistics landscape in the UAE.

Etihad Rail - the master developer and operator of the UAE's national railway network - today announces the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Arkan Building Materials Company, an integrated building materials manufacturer, to assess the use of the Etihad Rail network to transport raw materials and distribute its finished products.

Integral to the plan is a $13bn new international airport by 2013, though $20bn is also slated for road and highway projects and $5.5bn for a new deepwater port. There will be up to $40bn invested on rail construction, with a 340-km, 98-station metro line for Doha and its outskirts and a high-speed connection linking Qatar with other Gulf states.
