The ridership of the Dubai Metro, both the Red and Green Lines, during the first three months of 2016 year is on the rise compared to the same period 2015 year.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that a total of 13,879,636 passenger travelled on the Red and Green Lines during April, up from 11,298,414 in April 2013.

Abdullah Yousef Al Ali, Acting CEO of RTA Rail Agency, said: “The number of the metro riders during the first three months of this year constitute a solid indicator that the Dubai Metro has become one of the prime transit means commanding the attention of the Dubai residents, visitors and tourists, offering smooth mobility and access to key parts of the city in a way that measures up to the needs and expectations of users.

Commenting on the new device, Ahmed Mahboob, Director of Customers Service at RTA said, “The self-service kiosks are smart devices that enable customers to process various transactions themselves, thus obviating the need to visit the service centers, and accordingly save their time and effort.”

Dubai Metro stopped for 10 minutes on Tuesday, February 14, evening at around 7.30pm due to technical glitch. The trains stopped functioning between Union Station to Jebel Ali affecting the busy evening traffic. Commuters returning home after work had a tough time as entry gates were closed due to overcrowded stations.

One hundred million commuters have used the Dubai Metro’s red and green lines since the service was launched in September 2009 till November 7, 2011, according to Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

"We are very happy seeing the huge turnout. The support from the public shows that with constant efforts we will be able to popularise the culture of using public transport regularly," Hussain Mohammad Al Banna, Director of Traffic Department at the RTA, told Gulf News yesterday evening at the packed Union Station.

Dubai Metro Green Line. September 2011

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai on Wednesday announced that nearly 5.9 million people travelled on Dubai Metro during September. A press statement issued today said that the Green Line – which opened for public on Sept.10, clocked 1.277 million passengers in just 20 days whereas the number of riders on the Red Line during September (30 days) hit 4,661,469 passengers.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, will launch on September 9, 2011, the official operation of the Dubai Metro Green Line; which stretches 23 km and comprises 18 stations in addition to the two transfer stations; Union and Khalid bin Al Waleed Stations shared with the Red Line.
