“The Union Square underground metro station which spans an area of 25,000 square metres is the biggest metro station. The station is 230 metres long, 50 metres wide, has three levels and is 18 metres deep,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
He was briefing Peter Mandelson, the British Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform during a tour of different sites of Dubai Metro.
Al Tayer said that the station, which will have commercial outlets and service locations for metro users, has two entry points equipped with lifts and escalators.Four tunnels branching out of the station go to Burjuman and the Riqqa stations on the Red Line, and the Bani Yas and Salahuddin stations on the Green Line. Mandelson praised the use of the latest technology in the Dubai Metro project, and lauded the de luxe finishing of the metro coaches and stations.
He also praised the efforts of the RTA in expediting the construction.
The RTA is currently constructing the 74.1 kilometres long project at the initial cost of Dh15.5 billion. The Red Line is set to open on September 9 this year while the Green Line will open in March next year.
The official also toured the Trade Centre station on the Red Line, where the completion rate touched 80 per cent.
